Mask of Christ from the Pietá, carved by Michelangelo and competed in 1499. This famous work of art depicts the body of Christ on the lap of his mother Mary after the Crucifixion. The great master’s interpretation of the Pietá is unprecedented in Italian sculpture, balancing Renaissance ideals of classical beauty with naturalism. The original can be found in St. Peter’s.
