Head of a Faun

$150.00

Head of a Faun. Michelangelo’s first sculpture was a faun that caught the attention of Lorenzo de Medici. This is a copy of the piece on display at the Bargello in Florence. The original, now lost, was taken to Castello di Poppi during WWII. In late August of 1944, German soldiers stole the artworks hidden in the castle and the trail goes cold after the trucks departed on August 31st. It is unknown whether this mask was the original that got Michelangelo in with the Medici, but it is attributed to the sculptor and is a nice bit of history to wonder about.
